Abstract
Bacterial colonies have a pronounced role in the appearance and sustenance of postoperative wound infections. Currently, the most effective method of controlling wound infections is to remove the bacterial colonies by debridement and appropriate use of antimicrobial treatments. The use of antimicrobial agents without adequate debridement is not enough to eliminate bacterial colonies from infected wounds. The main scope of this project is to solve an important heath problem, that of wound infections. Due to its antimicrobial activity, zinc oxide (ZnO) is widely used in various fields, including biomedicine, cosmetics and pharmaceutics. Its efficiency has been proven by reducing infections, local inflammation and stimulating epithelialization. The purpose of the current study is to obtain and characterize the physico-chemical properties and biological activities of ZnO powders for treatment of artificially induced wound infections at different time intervals and for different concentrations established according to the clinical tissue evolution. More than that, this project proposal will have a major contribution to understanding the influence of synthesis parameters on the physico-chemical and biological properties. The fulfillment of this project proposal objectives will lead to a better understanding of the synergy between the physical and physiological environments of a wound infection and will create superior strategies for use of antiseptics in wound infection treatments.
