Strategies

Research at the “Carol Davila” University of Medicine and Pharmacy is organised around five thematic directions, set out in the Research Development Strategy 2025–2029. The directions address the main causes of morbidity and mortality in Romania and align with the societal challenges of the National Research, Innovation and Smart Specialisation Strategy (SNCISI) 2022–2027 (Health; Digitalisation; Civil Security), with European Research Area policies and with the destinations of the Horizon Europe Health cluster.

Strategic research directions 2025–2029

  1. Personalised and precision medicine, genomics and “omics” sciences – disease risk prediction, early diagnosis and targeted treatments tailored to the patient’s profile, with the national reference genome and the genomic diversity of the Romanian population (the ROGEN project). The direction aligns with the European Partnership for Personalised Medicine (EP PerMed) under Horizon Europe and connects to 1+ Million Genomes, Genome of Europe, the Genomic Data Infrastructure and the European Open Science Cloud.
  2. Reducing the burden of non-communicable diseases and healthy ageing – aligned with the Health cluster, the EU Mission on Cancer, Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan and the European joint programme on neurodegenerative diseases.
  3. Emerging infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance – responding to the One Health, HERA and EU4Health priorities.
  4. Innovative therapeutic structures – aligned with EU policy on new approach methodologies for testing medicines and medical devices.
  5. Digital health and artificial intelligence – aligned with the European Health Data Space and the Innovative Health Initiative.
