The Discipline of Oral and Maxillo-Facial Surgery, Anesthesiology and Sedation in dental medicine carries out teaching, research, and surgical activities. The Oral and Maxillo-Facial Surgery clinic has been functioning since 1949 in the hospital bearing the name of the founder- Prof. Dan Theodorescu and represents the basis for training students of the Faculty of Dentistry. In the clinic, the training of residents from medical and medico-dental specialties (OMF surgery, dental-alveolar surgery, ENT, plastic surgery, neurosurgery, parodontology, endodontics, dental prosthetics) is also conducted.

The clinic has been led over the years by teaching staff, remarkable personalities of the field: Acad. Valerian Popescu, Prof. Corneliu Burlibasa, Prof. Nicolae Ganuta, Prof. Alexandru Bucur.

The history of the discipline intertwines with that of the Faculty of Dentistry and encompasses events and accomplishments which have raised the discipline to a high level of national and international recognition (preparing specialty articles and papers, participating in scientific events).

A broad range of medical activities is performed in the Oral and Maxillo-Facial Surgery Clinic of the „Prof. Dan Theodorescu” OMFS Clinical Hospital: surgical treatment of benign/malignant oral and maxillo-cervicofacial tumors, surgical treatment of adenopathies on the I-V cervical levels, soft and bony parts reconstructive plastic surgery following traumata or surgical rezections, surgical treatment of salivary glands, temporo-mandibular joints, cheilo-maxillo-palatine clefts, serious dento-maxillary anomalies, oral and maxillo-cervico-facial infections, maxillary sinus afflictions of dental origin, treatment of oral and maxillo-cervico-facial traumatic lesions, trigeminal neuralgia, adjuvant surgical treatment for endodontic treatment and cronic marginal parodontopathies, preprosthetic surgical treatment of soft and bony parts, surgical treatment of dental inclusion etc.

Within this course, the students of the Faculty of Dentistry will learn basic notions regarding how to approach patients with surgical OMF pathologies, will learn how to make correlations between case history, objective examination and paraclinical tests in order to confirm/ make a differential diagnosis between surgical pathologies and their acute and chronic complications.
