Specialty of dentistry that deals with the study and jaws dental abnormalities,Dental and Facial Orthodontics and Orthopedics has an increasingly larger share in dental restorative therapy in aesthetics and functionality of the maxillary. The importance of this specialty is directly proportional to the frequency of growing disparities in the maxillary, orthodontic treatment and principles fundamentally conservative.

In Romania, Dental and Facial Orthodontics and Orthopedics becomes a subject and a study discipline in the Department of Infantile Dentistry of the Faculty of Dental Medicine in Bucharest, in 1961, by Prof. MD Patru Firu endeavors. Today, Dental and Facial Orthodontics and Orthopedics is taught as a subject in undergraduate studies, students of the Faculty of Dental Medicine of V and VI years.

It is a speciality also recognized in the E.U.  with proper training through residency for a period of three years, after which it's obtained the title of physician quality - the specialty of orthodontics and ODF. Also specific notions of Orthodontics and ODF are included in the curricula of residency and other dental specialties such as Prosthodontics, Periodontics, Endodontics, dental alveolar surgery, Pedodontics.

Medical clinical activity is structured so that it allows covering theoretical and practical concepts included in the curricula fot the students of the Faculty of Dental Medicine  and curricula of medical residents specializing in Dental and Facial Orthodontics and Orthopedics or other specialties.

Educational process and theoretical and practical training of students of V th and VI th years in the discipline aims ownership of these orthodontic notions for future use in their practice, regardless of specialty that will address. Amongst specific orthodontic knowledge to be acquired by students include:

  • characteristics of growth and development of the maxillary
  • etiologic factors and pathogenic mechanisms involved in producing malformations and jaws dental abnormalities;
  • theory and practice necessary to achieve clinical history and clinical examination of patients' facial and intraoral, functional examination;
  • additional investigative learning methods in orthodontics (study designs, radiological examination);
  • clinical characteristics of the main types of malocclusions with orthodontic diagnosis;
  • pasic principles in orthodontic therapy, especially in prophylactic and preventive therapy;
  • practical and theoretical notions orthodontic appliances;
  • the role of orthodontic therapy in complex interdisciplinary treatments.

The goal is thus the theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the field of orthodontics and ODF, mainly by recognizing the jaws dental abnormalities of the first clinical signs.

In parallel with the medical clinic and theoretical and practical teaching, also research activities are conducted, important condition for progress and development of this specialty. The research provides an opportunity for continuous improvement of teachers in our discipline and research training student, resident, physician found during PhD research. From this perspective, they are discussed subjects in the field of basic research and clinical research topics, investigational and orthodontic therapy.
