Pediatric education for students of the Faculty of Dental Medicine in Bucharest was held in the "Grigore Alexandrescu" Children Emergency Hospital, Pediatric Clinic since 1954. Academics, assistants and lecturers, were the ones who ensured the education of Pediatrics at the Faculty of Medicine. Between 1970 – 1973, Prof. Dr. Patru Meila and Prof. Dr. Mircea Geormaneanu - exceptional pediatric personalities - worked as professors of pediatrics at the Faculty of Dental Medicine.

Pediatric education for students of the Faculty of Dental Medicine was separated in 2005, when Prof. Dr. Ulmeanu Coriolan Emil established, in agreement with the University of Medicine and Pharmacy "Carol Davila" and the Ministry of Health, the Clinic no. II of Pediatrics for the Faculty of Dental Medicine and promoted three academics for this new department. The clinic is grafted on the structure of the Toxicology- ATI Department, where research activity is conducted.

The Toxicology - ATI Department is an emergency department with 25 beds that hospitalizes more than 3,500 severe cases - pediatric emergencies and more than 1,000 serious cases of voluntary  and accidental poisoning on children and adolescents. The students of the Faculty of Dental Medicine have the opportunity to see during the pediatric internship a large number of particular and very educational cases, in the didactic point of view. Within the ward, the TOXAPEL phone call service, which was founded in 1998, provides first aid in acute poisoning in children and receives over 350 calls per month.

Within the Department of Pediatrics, over 450 forth-year students of the Faculty of Dental Medicine and over 50 residents in pediatrics, family medicine and others carry out their Pediatric Internship. All the teaching materials needed for the training process are provided, including competitive software.

The research activity is conducted together with the Department of Toxicology of the Bucharest Emergency Clinical Hospital and the National Antidrug Agency. In the department, there are over 10 research subjects, many of them completed in the framework of  doctoral thesis with national premiere studies, multicenter studies.

Educational activities with students of the forth year in the Faculty of Dental Medicine is grouped as follows:

  • 7 courses of 2 hours – including pediatric pathology, insisting on topics of interest to dental students;
  • 7 days of practical training that include targeted practical microcourses and clinical training with the presentation of case studies for the border pathology.

For students, the bibliography for courses and practical training is represented by:

  • Textbook of Pediatrics, Second Edition - University Course for Students - Faculty of Dental Medicine, Prof. Dr. Ulmeanu Coriolan Emil, 2014
  • Nelson Textbook of Pediatrics, 19th, 2011

PhD students that carry out their activity in the Department of Toxicology, in number of eight, have approached current topics including fundamental research in toxicology. The research topics are valued by presenting original papers at the European Congresses of Toxicology, in number of 7 or 8 papers per year.

The promoted postgraduate courses approach issues that belong to the pediatric emergency and to the experimental and clinical toxicology.
