The Nephrology Clinic of the Fundeni Clinical Institute comprises of the Clinical Nephrology Unit, with 46 beds, of which 8 belong ot the Peritoneal Dialysis Compartment and 8 to the Adult Hemodialysis Unit. The clinic also includes: Vascular Access Lab, Echographic Investigations Lab, Seric and Urinary Biomarkers in renal injury Lab.

Staffing with subspecialized medical personnel (in european and international centers) allows the treatment of the Romanian difficult neophrologic pathology in its entire complexity. The medical services provided are: diagnosis and treatment of primitive and secondary glomerulopathies, diagnosis and treatment of primitive and secondary tubulo-interstitial nephropathies, diagnosis and treatment of rare nephrologic diseases, management of chronic kidney disease patient, diagnosis and treatment of acute renal injury, diagnosis and treatment of vascular and peritoneal access malfunction, diagnosis and treatment of urinary tract lithiasis, diagnosis and treatment of reno-urinary system infectious pathology.

In 2015, the medical activity of the Clinic consisted of: over 5000 admitted patients, 1000 day hospitalizations, over 6500 sessions of renal function substitution, over 200 patients initiated into a procedure of renal function substitution, over 150 renal puncture biopsies.

The activity of the Nephrology discipline is in accordance with the teaching activity of other university centers in the country and abroad. We are pursuing the creation of professional, deductive and ethical-decisional discernment of the medicine student.

The objectives of the Nephrology discipline are: familiarizing the student with the reno-urinary system pathology in general, with the pathology of other organs which also has an impact in the nephrological sphere, and with the principles of diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic nephrological disorders.

The student, during the Nephrology module, will learn the technique of performing a general clinical examination of the reno-urinary system, the paraclinical and imagistic exams specific to renal pathology, will familiarize with setting up a temporary/permanent vascular approach for hemodialysis, mounting a peritoneal dialysis catheter, the techniques of renal function substitution, both acute and chronic, with the echography of the reno-urinary system, the diagnosis and emergency attitude towards acute nephrological disorders: renal colic, anuria, hematuria, urine retention, acute kidney injury etc.

The teaching process takes place in 2 lecture halls (fitted with videoprojector and projection screen, sound system, computer with Internet access, computer connected to the medical imagistics visualisation network) and a number of 6 practicum halls (fitted with devices specific to practical demonstrations).

Our clinic contributes to the formation of 500 students/ academic year, students who are part of the nephrology module, belonging to the curriculum of the 5th year of training, of which one training module in English.

Over the last 3 years, 2 programs for the training of students, doctoral students and post-doctoral researchers with European funding have been successfully carried out in our clinic (Project POSDRU/161/2.1/G/135802 „Partnership for a successful career in medical specialties involved in renal pathology”, Coordinator – UMPh „Carol Davila” and project POSDRU/159/1.5/S/135760; 2014 „CERO – Career Profile: Romanian researcher”, Coordinator- UMPh „Carol Davila”)

Scientific research has been a constant concern for the staff of our Discipline, and for this reason we have participated as members or leaders of research teams in 20 national and international research-development projects in the fields of reno-urinary pathology.

The clinic also carries out 10 international multicentric clinical research studies in the fields of renal pathology (diabetic nephropathy, autosomal dominant polycystic disease, anemia in chronic renal disease, complicated infections of the reno-urinary system, renal osteodystrophy, cardiovascular disease of patients with chronic renal disease and infections of the vascular approach of hemodialysed patients).

The results of the research activity of our discipline’s academic staff are included in over 300 scientific works published in extenso or as abstracts in specialty journals, or presented during prestigious national and international scientific events.

We have permanently encouraged the involvement in the research activity of the students and residents in training stages within our clinic, as their contribution is very important.
