"Dr. Victor Gomoiu " Children's Hospital was opened in 1927, initially as a medical and social settlement called "Saint Helena", the director at that time being their founder, Prof. Dr. Victor Gomoiu. Organized perfectly under his leadership and recommended as a model by the Health Department of the League of Nations in Geneva, the hospital had 10 offices for various specialties, two laboratories, a pharmacy and 60 beds for patients.

After the Second World War, the hospital received an exclusive destination for pediatric practice and its name became Children's Hospital "23 August". The current name of "Dr. Victor Gomoiu" Children's Hospital, attributed in 1990, is a repair and a tribute to the man and exceptional doctor who was Professor Victor Gomoiu.

In this hospital have been operating since the '70s and then the '90s important teachers in Romanian pediatrics, starting with Prof. Dr. Valeriu Popescu, continuing with Prof. Dr. Dimitrie Dragomir, Prof. Dr . Constantin Arion.

The Department of Pediatrics was established in 1977 under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Valeriu Popescu , and the Department of Pediatrics and Pediatric Neurology was founded in 1987.

Currently, the discipline, comprising a total of 16 extremely well trained teachers with varied competencies / pediatric specialties (gastroenterology, cardiology, pulmonology, neurology, palliative medicine, functional explorations, etc.), is led by Prof. Dr. Mrs. Doina Anca Plesca, MD pediatrician, pediatric neurology physician, specialization in pediatric pulmonology.

The Pediatrics and pediatric neurology clinic operates within "Dr. Victor Gomoiu" Clinical Children's Hospital. This unit is composed of the following sections:

The pediatric clinical section has the following departments:

  • Acute therapy
  • Pediatric gastroenterology
  • Alergology
  • General pediatrics
  • Pediatric neurology
  • Pediatric cardiology
  • Pediatrica Recovery Department
  • N.T. Section
  • Radiology and Medical Imaging Laboratory
  • Medical analysis laboratory
  • Incorporated outpatient policlinic

The pathology covering medical work, teaching and research is structured as follows:

  • Care of children with acute or chronic pediatric pathology (respiratory, digestive, cardiac, renal, rheumatic diseases, metabolic diseases, neuromuscular disorders, genetic diseases, other rare diseases, etc.)
  • Care of children suffering acute or chronic neurological disorders (epilepsy, cerebral palsy, degenerative diseases of the nervous system, neuromuscular diseases, etc.)

By the extremely diversified structure of pathologies that come into the hospital, it was managed to cover all chapters in the pediatric training program, that students and residents go through.

Pediatrics is a compulsory subject. Within this discipline notions of infant care, general pediatrics and pediatric neurology are studied. This discipline is addressed to students in the fifth year of the "Carol Davila" Faculty of Medicine. Annually, over 800 students carry out their practical training in pediatric module, structured as follows:

  • 3 pediatric modules, infant care / 8 wk. - 75 h course, 150 hours practical work;
  • 8 modules of the module pediatric neurology, within the pediatric module/ 2 weeks. - 12 hours lecture, 30 hours practical work;
  • 1 module from the module pediatric neurology, pediatric English module / 2 weeks. - 12 hours lecture, 30 hours practical work.

Postgraduate courses are annually reported to the Rectorate of "Carol Davila" and are published in the journal Medical Life. The duration of the course modules is either 2-week daily or 6 weeks 1 day/ week.

The series of training courses on specialized topics in Pediatrics and Pediatric Neurology addresses family doctors, school doctors, medical specialists and are credited with hours of continuous education by the College of Physicians.
