Students organizations

Medical Students’ Society of Bucharest

Medical Students Society of Bucharest (SSMB) was founded on January 13, 1875, six years after the establishment of the Faculty of Medicine in Bucharest. The initiative stemmed from the students’ desire to engage in scientific activities within an organized framework, during a period when access to contemporary medical books and journals was limited due to underdeveloped libraries that did not provide the latest publications in the field. Thus, Nicolae Manolescu, along with nine other founding members, laid the foundation for the first student society in Romania.

In January 1881, the members of the Society published the first issue of the scientific communication journal "Spitalul," which was released monthly and distributed by subscription. This journal was the first scientific publication edited in Romania. In the following period, the Society experienced exponential growth.

In 1991, SSMB, along with 11 other student organizations, became a founding member of the Federation of Medical Students’ Associations in Romania (FASMR) – FASMR – Together We Make a Difference! Through FASMR, the Society would later achieve the status of a member of the International Federation of Medical Students' Associations (IFMSA). Through its active involvement within FASMR, SSMB contributes to the adoption of national positions for medical students regarding issues that directly affect them. These positions are then forwarded to the Ministry of Health for resolution or legislative debate.

Additionally, SSMB is a founding member of the Union of Students in Romania (USR), an organization that ensures the representation of medical students in all bodies involved in student-related matters.

Currently, SSMB is an independent, non-political, and non-governmental student organization that represents the students of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy "Carol Davila". Following the IFMSA model, the organization is divided into departments and divisions, each playing an essential role in the execution of the Society's activities. In addition to its active involvement in student representation, through projects, conferences, and workshops, SSMB manages to leave its mark on other members of society as well.

Thus, the organization aims to ensure equal access to education and medical care for all citizens, to inform the public about concepts of public health, reproductive health, human rights, and peace, and to offer scientific, research, and international exchange opportunities for the future generation of doctors.

Admission simulation

The Medical Admission Exam Simulation is the only pre-admission event recognized by the "Carol Davila" University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest. It is a flagship project of SSMB, designed to bring together current medical students and future generations, allowing them to share their experiences and support high school students preparing for the entrance exam.

The simulation aims to encourage students to discover new information that can be further explored, ensuring they are well-prepared to achieve the best results on exam day. By participating, they have the opportunity to take an exam conducted under conditions similar to those of the actual admission test.

For the organization of our event, now in its 15th edition, over 900 medical students volunteer annually to create an experience that closely resembles the actual admission exam for over 3,700 participants.

After the simulation itself, participants have the chance to become familiar with student life and learn about the opportunities our university offers through UMFCD Students’ Fair, the largest fair in Romania for enthusiastic high school students aspiring to become doctors. From first aid courses at the Innovation and eHealth Center (CIeH) and surgical workshops to Erasmus exchange experiences and medical research projects like Space Medicine, participants eager to take their first steps toward a medical career will find all this and more at the fair.

You can follow our activities on the dedicated simulation website: simulare.ssmb.ro, or on SSMB’s social media pages!

Bucharest Society of Pharmacy Students

Bucharest Society of Pharmacy Students (SSFB) is a non-governmental, apolitical, and independent organization functioning within the Faculty of Pharmacy, Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest.

The purpose of the society, as defined in its charter, is to defend the interests of young students from the Faculty of Pharmacy in the scientific, social, and cultural fields. It is an independent organization from the authorities of the Faculty of Pharmacy in Bucharest, but it maintains close cooperative relationships with them, as well as with other professional and student organizations from the Faculties of Medicine and Dentistry.

SSFB is an active member with full rights in: the Federation of Pharmacy Students' Associations in Romania (FASFR), the European Pharmaceutical Students’ Association (EPSA), the International Pharmaceutical Students’ Association (IPSF), and the National Alliance of Student Organizations in Romania (ANOSR).

Over time, driven by the desire to stay up-to-date with the latest developments in the field and because it is essential to become true professionals, we have defined our Vision and Mission. Thus, our vision is to create positive change within the population through the personal and professional development of pharmacy students.

With great courage and the confidence that we are the catalysts for a prosperous future, we fulfill our objectives guided by our mission:

We offer students and volunteers projects tailored to their needs;

We build a united community of pharmacy students;

We collaborate with professors to adapt the educational program through representation and the promotion of student regulations and rights;

We facilitate students' access to national and international opportunities.

The outstanding achievements of SSFB have been recognized through various awards and nominations. These include being named "Most Active Student Association" at the Gala of Pharmacists in December 2014. The organization was also nominated as one of the Top 3 Most Influential Associations in Europe at the EPSA Annual Congress in April 2015. Their charitable initiatives, such as the Christmas Charity Project and the Blood Donation Campaign, have been highlighted in the Gala of Civil Society in both 2022 and 2023. Additionally, SSFB earned the second prize in the "Project of the Year 2023 for Social Inclusion" category at the Youth Gala organized by the Ministry of Family, Youth, and Equal Opportunities, for their project “Prescribe a Smile! :)”.

Over more than 30 years of activity, SSFB has organized approximately 30 projects annually, aimed at both pharmacy students and the general public. These projects cover topics related to current health issues and the pharmacy profession, with a focus on the personal and professional development of pharmacy students and SSFB volunteers. The organization conducts projects aligned with the FASFR framework, as well as those by EPSA, IPSF, and ANOSR.

Among the traditional projects of the Society are:

The Student Scientific Communication Session is a project that provides all students with the opportunity to present their research work before their peers from the Faculty of Pharmacy and a jury composed of teaching staff.

The SSFB Summer School, a project that began in 2009, has reached its 9th edition. Over the course of 5 days, participants gather in a mountain or seaside location to explore new opportunities and develop skills that define them. This event is a great way to build new friendships and spend part of the summer vacation in a different and enriching way.

"Prescrie un Zâmbet! :)" is one of the Society's most beloved projects through which, each year during the winter holidays, we aim to bring joy and smiles to those around us. For us, as pharmacy students, passion, empathy, and the spirit of helping others are fundamental values that define who we are. The main fundraising event is the traditional carol concert "Colindă, Farmacie! Dăruiește bucurie!", performed by a choir made up of students and graduates.

The pHarma Student magazine is a part of SSFB's tradition and is created by students for students. Published annually in two issues, the magazine features articles on a wide range of topics related to both pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical fields. Contributions come from students, faculty members, graduates, and SSFB partners, showcasing a collaborative effort to share knowledge and experiences within the pharmacy community.

Another impactful campaign is the Blood Donation Campaign, organized in partnership with the Centrul de Transfuzie Sanguină „Col. prof. dr. Nicolae Nestorescu” (Blood Transfusion Center of the Ministry of National Defense). This initiative primarily aims to collect blood by setting up a donation center within the Faculty of Pharmacy in Bucharest. Each edition of the campaign involves more than 20 students and faculty members, contributing to the lifesaving of over 60 individuals.

Any student or graduate (up to a maximum of 2 years post-graduation) of the Faculty of Pharmacy in Bucharest, regardless of nationality, can register as a member of SSFB.

Romanian Student Surgical Society

Founded in 2004 in Bucharest, the Romanian Student Surgical Society (SSCR) is a non-governmental organization dedicated to developing practical training methods for students in medical university centers across the country. Our aim is to provide high-quality hands-on educational experiences through workshops and scientific events focused on various surgical topics.

Our mission is to align with the evolution of Romanian surgical education, promoting excellence in results and training generations of surgeons with exceptional professional and human competence.

Our events include hands-on workshops, where participants engage actively under the guidance of trained specialists, and scientific activities such as conferences, presentations, and debates. These aim to connect students with the scientific community from the early years of their education. We also organize the international congress, SURGICON.

In recent years, SSCR has achieved notable success through the organization of the Residency Exam Simulation. The goal is to help our graduate colleagues adapt to this significant step in their professional journey. We strive to provide an experience as close as possible to the real exam, both in terms of organization and the diversity and complexity of the test topics.

Our activities aim to create an environment conducive to developing skills and knowledge that are valuable throughout a medical career, supporting the establishment of a strong informational foundation that can be expanded in the future.

The Scientific Organisation of Medical Students

The Scientific Organization of Medical Students (SOMS) was founded in 1987 and gained legal status in April 1991. It is the only student organization within the "Carol Davila" University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest that focuses exclusively on scientific and non-union activities. SOMS aims to foster scientific engagement among medical students through various educational and research-oriented initiatives.

Since its founding, SOMS has made its mark through regular scientific communication sessions, workshops, and summer schools, as well as through its own publication, IATROS, which ran from 1990 to 1992 with its editorial office located at the Faculty of Medicine. The organization demonstrated its viability by participating in the organization of four International Scientific Student Congresses held in Sinaia (1993) and Bucharest (1994, 1998, 2002).

The primary aim of SOMS is to promote science among students. This mission is embodied in their flagship event, the MEDICS (Medical International Conference for Students), which attracts over 600 participants annually and will celebrate its 10th edition in 2025. MEDICS brings some of the most remarkable international scientific discoveries to Romania. Over the years, the conference has hosted over 60 international speakers, including five Nobel laureates.

In addition to the MEDICS congress, SOMS organizes various workshops focused on scientific topics in collaboration with medical professionals and researchers. For example, QUBICL is a workshop centered on biochemistry, where participants can measure their salivary cortisol levels, providing hands-on experience in biochemical testing. PILL is another popular SOMS event that introduces students to the pharmaceutical field, specifically the manufacturing process of medications. Lastly, FOCUS is a specialized workshop on echocardiography designed for students in their clinical years, offering them practical exposure to this vital diagnostic technique.

Among the most sought-after events organized by SOMS is Summer Opportunities Abroad, which allows students to learn about international research opportunities available during the summer months. Through its activities and projects, SOMS consistently applies the foundational concepts behind its creation, striving to channel the enthusiasm of its young members into the realities of student scientific life in Romania. The organization’s main objective is to foster improvement and progress in the student scientific community, promoting development and growth in research and knowledge.
