The Orthopedics and Traumatology discipline of the Emergency University Hospital in Bucharest has almost 40 years of experience, being established in 1978, and throughout the years has treated a huge range of musculo-skeletal disorders, both traumatic and orthopaedic in nature.

The section comprises approximately 100 beds and 3 fully equipped operating rooms (newest generation orthopaedic and surgical tables, arthroscopy equipment for interventions on the hips, knees and shoulders, equipment for both primary interventions and revisions, complex equipment to perform operations in the case of sports injuries, or on the vertebral column and the foot, as well as equipment to deal with any type of fracture, high quality orthopaedic drills, modern anaesthesiology equipment, etc.) in which approximately 5000 surgeries are performed annually. The section also performs a large number of surgical interventions for the treatment of tumoral pathologies, in close collaboration with the oncology section of the hospital, where patients undergo chemotherapy and which will soon have radiotherapy equipment. Osteoarticular tumors often require arthroplastic reconstructive treatment with personalized prosthetics.

Didactic activities conducted by the orthopaedics and traumatology discipline are for students of Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy (at least 5 series each year, which study in the English or Romanian language) as well as medical residents; these are ensured by academic personnel. In addition to the regular didactic activities for students, the discipline provides an optional course for students in 5th year about musculo-skeletal pathology in athletes.

The section treats a wide range of musculo-skeletal disorders, both traumatic and orthopaedic in nature

Orthopedic interventions:
- Arthroplasties (replacement) of the hips, knees and shoulders, both as a primary intervention or revision for coxarthrosis, gonarthrosis, arthrosis of the shoulder, aseptic necrosis of the femoral head, dysplasia of the hips, rheumatoid arthritis, etc.
- Arthroscopic surgery for afflictions of the knees, shoulder or ankles (meniscal lesions, cruciate ligament lesions, dissecting osteochondritis, rotator cuff muscle lesions, shoulder impingement syndrome, shoulder instability, sequelae of ankle sprains "football player’s ankle", etc)
- Treatment of muscul-skeletal tumors (osteosarcoma, chondrosarcoma, fibrosarcoma, osteoid osteoma, giant cell tumors, osteochondroma, enchondroma, fibrous dysplasia, osseous metastases, etc.)
- Treatment of vertebral column afflictions
- Treatment of congenital malformations and their sequelae
- Treatment of ankle and foot afflictions: hallux valgus, Freiberg disease, Morton neuralgia, flat foot, cavus foot, ankle arthroses, subtalar arthroses
- Treatment for limb length discrepancy

Traumatic injuries:
- Fracture of the clavicle, fracture of the humerus, fracture of the radius and ulna, scaphoid fracture, metacarpal fracture, fractures of the phalanges.
- Fracture of the femoral head, fracture of the greater trochanter, femoral fracture, patellar fracture, tibial fracture, maleolar fracture, calcaneal fracture, fracture of the talus, metatarsals and phalanges.
- Pelvic fracture, coccygeal fracture
- Traumatic dislocations

Within the discipline, research and doctoral thesis studies are conducted under the guidance of the scientific coordinator University Professor Dr. Catalin Florin Cirstoiu.
