The Scientific Organisation of Medical Students – SOMS was founded in 1987 and obtained legal character in April 1991. SOMS is the only students’ association with exclusively scientific and non union activities in Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Bucharest.
SOMS has always been selective in recruiting new members, accepting only medical students with ongoing scientific activities, proven by communications and publications; students of a high professional level who are a credit to the University. The rigorous selection process to become a member of SOMS results in a large number of former members becoming professors or active in research programmes in prestigious centres both locally and abroad.
Since its foundation, SOMS has conducted monthly scientific communication sessions, workshops and summer schools regularly and even hosted its own magazine called IATROS between 1990 and 1992, with an editorial office in the Faculty of Medicine. SOMS has proven its viability by participating in the organization of no less than 4 International Scientific Students Cogresses in Sinaia (1993) and Bucharest (1994, 1998, 2002).
Through its activities and projects, SOMS remains true to the concepts of its foundation, trying to model the personality of its young members and nurture their passion for the scientific student life in Romania, whose growth and evolution is the main goal of SOMS.
