Since 1959 , the Urology Clinic was headed by eminent personalities, from 1959 to 1975 by Prof. Dr. Doc . Gh . Olanescu , and between 1975-1997 by Prof. Doc . E. Proca , who performed here the first kidney transplant  in Romania , in 1980.

From 1980 to June 1997 were performed 45 kidney transplants .  Since 1997, the head of the Center for Renal Transplantation and Uronefrology is Mr. Academician Ioanel Sinescu. In 1997, Mr. Acad. I. Sinescu performed the first kidney transplant in Romania in adults, with a kidney harvested from a donor in brain death (Transplantation Act);

  • 1997 - Law of Transplantation of human organs and tissue;
  • 1998 - The first kidney transplant in a diabetic patient in Romania and the first kidney transplant in Romania, in a child, with kidney harvested from a donor brain dead;
  • 1998-2002 - Preparation of two new medical and surgical kidney transplant centers in Iasi and Oradea;
  • 2005 - The first kidney transplant in Romania in an anephric child (bilateral nephrectomy for Wilms tumor);
  • 2011 - The first kidney transplant between identical twins in Romania (genetically identical).

From June 1997 to July 2016, 1756 of renal transplants were made (650 with grafts from  brain dead donors), with an average of 100 transplants / year (116/2007, 114/2008, 115/2013 , 148/2014), for which results coincide with those of reference centers in the world.

The Renal Transplantation and Uronephrology Center  comprises sections of Urological Surgery :

  • Urology Section I ( 2nd floor ) with 26 beds ; there is also here the Department of Renal Transplantation with 30 beds .
  • Urology Section II (4th floor ) has 39 beds,
  • Urology Department III (4th floor ) has 35 beds and
  • Urology Section IV ( 1st floor) has 35 beds . Also on the 4th floor is the operating theater and Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care II ( 22 beds)

The operating suite , Department of Anesthesiology  and Intensive Care II and Department of Renal Transplantation  are rebuilt , with a modern finish,equipped and inaugurated in January 2015.

The ultramodern equipped operating theater with complete technical equipment and air conditioning  is composed of 10 operating rooms:

  • 5 rooms for open Surgical Urology and Renal Transplantation
  • 3 rooms for Endourology of the lower urinary tract and
  • 2 halls for Endourology of the upper urinary tract

The center also comprises :

  • Department of Dialysis ,
  • The Extracorporeal Shock Wave Litotripsy( ESWL )Unit,
  • Ultrasound laboratories, Urodynamic Laboratory ,
  • Renal Transplant Ambulatory and the Emergency Room

  • Extracorporeal shock wave Lithotripsy ( ESWL ),
  • Andrology,
  • Diagnosis and treatment of erectile dysfunction and urological imaging

In the Center for Urological Surgery and Renal Transplants – Discipline of Urological Surgery – Clinical Institute Fundeni of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy "Carol Davila" in Bucharest, students of the 5th year are being taught.

Here, students conduct their internships, practical sessions, and undergo their examinations.  Over the period of the internship the courses start daily at 9:00, followed by the microcourse (20 minutes) and the practical training until 13:00.

The practical examination takes place in the second to last day of the urology internship, while the written examination takes place in the last day, starting at 8:30, in the amphitheater from the 8th floor.  The schedule of the course for the students in the 5th year may be downloaded here:

In addition, 24 resident medics are being trained here for the specialization of Urology, with the addition of internships for residents from other specializations (gynecology, nephrology, general surgery, etc.)

The Center for Urological Surgery and Transplants is the center of methodological improvement for the entire national network of urology, through its perfecting and supraspecialization courses, and is a researching center accredited by the Ministry of Education and Research and by the National Council of Scientific Research of Higher Education since March 2002.

Its top technological equipment allows an extremely rich and diverse activity in terms of the pathology addressed, raising the Center for Urological Surgery and Renal Transplants at the true professional level of a "Center of Excellence", as it is values at the European Association of Urology.
