When the hospital first opened, the urology clinic was lead by Senior lecturer Dr. Bocancea Dragos. In addition to Dr Dragos, the clinical team included Dr. Constantinescu Edmond, Dr. Baicu Gheorghe, Dr. Tataru Viorel, and lastly Dr. Calota Viorel. Dr Petrisor Geavlete joined the team in 1985, being a teaching assistant at the time. From 1986 to 1994, Prof. Eugeniu Popescu was the head of the Urology Clinic. Under his leadership, the proportion of endoscopic procedures for resolving lower urinary system pathologies began to increase. Likewise, the clinical and didactic team grew, to include Dr. Ion Arabagiu and Dr. Jora Toni.
In 1994, Dr. Petrisor Geavlete, who was a senior lecturer at the time, became the head of the urology clinic, due to his rich experience and multiple professional modules attended abroad (Paris, Oxford, Lyon, etc.). He initiated some changes regarding the structure of the clinic and diversity of pathologies treated. Some of these changes included the use of a retrograde ureteroscopic approach for upper urinary tract interventions, and the acquisition of endourologic equipment (making endoscopic interventions or investigations accessible to all medics without any restrictions). The clinical team expanded to include many young doctors: Dr. Georgescu Dragos, Dr. Cauni Victor, Dr. Mirciulescu Victor and Dr. Nita Gheorghe. Likewise an increasing number of medical residents pursue training modules within the clinic.
Currently, the clinical team is composed of the following medics: Prof. Dr. Petrisor Geavlete (head of the clinic, MD, doctor of medicine, corresponding member of the Academy of Medical Sciences), Dr. Constantinescu Edmond (MD, doctor of medicine), Dr. Arabagiu Ion (lecturer, MD, doctor of medicine), Dr. Georgescu Dragos (lecturer, MD, doctor of medicine, certified echographist), Dr. Mirciulescu Victor (researcher, MD, doctor of medicine, extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy), Dr. Soroiu Doru (MD, doctor of medicine), Dr. Multescu Razvan (MD, doctor of medicine, certified echographist), Dr. Alexandrescu Emanuel (MD, doctoral student, certified echographist), Dr. Ene Cosmin (teaching assistant, specialist, doctor of medicine, certified echographist), Dr. Geavlete Bogdan (lecturer, MD, doctor of medicine, certified echographist), Dr. Moldoveanu Cristian (MD, doctor of medicine, certified echographist), Dr. Florin Stănescu (MD, doctor of medicine, certified echographist), Dr. Jecu Marian (teaching assistant, MD, doctor of medicine, certified echographist).Bottom of Form
The head of the clinic is constantly occupied with various ways in which to improve the work conditions of the clinic, both for the surgical team (the operating area was renovated in 2003, and another operating room was added in 2007) and those working in the section (which was renovated gradually in the period 1998-2009). The urology clinic of Sf. Ioan Hospital in Bucharest is constantly making efforts to conform to modern standards of urologic practice, which is demonstrated by the wide range of complex surgical interventions, both open and minimally invasive (one of the first national programs), that they offer to their patients.
Many of the medics from our clinic have participated in professional learning modules abroad, and continue to develop professionally by becoming certified in echography, laparoscopy or percutaneous renal approaches. The majority of our medics also pursue doctoral studies. Our clinical activities are becoming well-known throughout the country, but also abroad, focusing especially on the endourologic approach. As a result, we often attend international scientific congresses with our works; the head of the clinic, Prof. Dr. P. Geavlete, is often invited to participate in such events as a speaker or chairman. Due to the large volume of annual interventions, which has exceeded 4000 in the last years, we publish many articles on urologic topics both nationally and internationally in prestigious journals, and communicate our findings in scientific congresses; we have also published two books on urology.
