The Discipline of Family Medicine was founded in 1998, under the initiative of the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine – Prof. Eugen Pascal Ciofu, in accordance with the requirements of the European teaching system. This department was initially led by Lecturer Ioana Grajdeanu, with a faculty consisting of Assist. Lecturer Sandu Mihaela and Assoc. Prof. Adrian Restian. Since February 2002, the head of the discipline, promoted by competition, has been Prof. Dumitru Matei. Presently, the faculty consists of 3 Lecturers and 8 Assist. Lecturers. The Family Medicine module was initially organised for 5th year students, being structured in a 3-week period, with 30 hours of lectures and 45 hours of practicums.
The lectures were held at the Discipline’s headquarters, and the practicums in the Family Medicine practices, under the guidance of assistant lecturers.
During the 2004-2005 academic year, the Family Medicine module was moved to the 6th year, lasting for 3 weeks, 40 lecture hours and 60 practicum hours, in order to allow the students to gain the basic knowledge from all medical specialties, in order to have an integral approach of the patient, compatible with the Family Medicine specialty.
Family medicine’s specific object of activity is: the patient, healthy or ill, integrated in the family, living and working environment, with all his/her problems and medical needs – which involves health promotion, disease prevention and curative activities.
Family medicine is mainly a clinical, communicational and synthetic specialty, the diagnosis relying on the case history and objective exam of the patient. The current activity is represented by exams performed in the private practice for acute and chronic ailments, as well as house calls.
The family physician creates a synthesis of both the applied treatments and all biological, psychological and social factors involved in the patient’s pathology. The family physician, through a unitary and synthetic conception, has the capability to inventorize all the disorders of the patient, to figure out the connections between these disorders and to hierarchize the diseases and the drugs the patient needs. A great part of the daily activity of the family physician is oriented towards primary, secondary and tertiary prevention.
The family physician also do prophylactic checks on new-borns and infants, as well as new mothers upon discharge from the hospital.
The Family medicine discipline insures teaching activity for all the students of the Faculty of Medicine, including the English module. The Family Medicine module is a part of the 6th year, lasts for 3 weeks, comprising of a total of 100 hours, 40 hours of lectures and 60 of practicums. The incumbent of the lecture activities is Prof. Dumitru Matei.
The lectures are held, by rotation, by all the members of the discipline, at the discipline’s headquarters. The practicums take place in the private practices of the members of the discipline. The assessment of the students consists of evaluating the practical skills obtained during the practicums by the doctor under which the practicum was completed, and the final, written examination, which consists of 10 subjects from the lecture notes.
Lecture notes, bibliography and the student’s notes are the study material. There is an online platform (elearning), where students have access by individual password to the lecture notes, in Romanian as well as in English.
The faculty of the discipline, under the coordination of Prof. Dumitru Matei, has written 2 books for the students and residents – Family Medicine Essentials, 3rd edition, and Practical Guide of Family Medicine. The discipline is the center of guidance for family medicine residents. They benefit from weekly lectures during the first year and third year – from the residency curriculum.
Residents have access via individual password to the lecture notes, uploaded to the online elearning platform. Each module ends with a written evaluation, its result being written in the resident grade book. The family medicine discipline insures the final assessment of the residents, written and practical – clinical case of a child, of an adult and interpreting lab test reports – during the family medicine specialty exam, at the end of the 3 years of residency. The members of the discipline also examine candidates for the title of senior specialist. The research activity is oriented towards epidemiological and clinical aspects of the pathology frequently encountered by a family physician: cardiovascular diseases, chronic respiratory diseases, aspects of allergies, metabolic diseases, diabetes mellitus, obesity, both in children and adults, menopause, rheumatic disorders (rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus), mental health of children as well as adults. In the research activity residents and even students are involved.
The results of the research are implemented in medical assistance and medical teaching, in finalising doctoral studies, publishing articles in various medical journals, indexed in international databases, and presentations during national and international scientific sessions.
