With the approval of the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Public Instruction, in 1862, at the National School of Medicine and Pharmacy (founded in1857), Analytical Chemistry was firstly introduced as one of three study directions in the Pharmacy Curriculum. Remarkable personalities have essentially contributed to establish a teaching, study and research structure in the Analytical Chemistry Department, appropriate for the needs of pharmaceutical education.
Among them we can mention professor Şt. Minovici, head of the Analytical Chemistry Department between 1897 and 1925, who introduced the doctorate as a form of higher specialization for the Romanian pharmacists. In 1898, under his guidance, there was presented the first doctoral thesis in pharmacy in our country.
Professor Nicolae T. Deleanu reorganized the laboratories and also created a specialized library with up to date books and journals of analytical chemistry, and professor Gh. Ciogolea organized the educational activity and the laboratories of the discipline, and also Drug Control courses. In the last 40 years Professor Gheorghe Morait and Professor Crina-Maria Monciu, prominent teachers, have coordinated the orientation towards current trends in the pharmaceutical analysis, inspiring both the teaching staff and the students, the wish for continuous improvement, but also the assumption of social responsibility increasingly associated with analytical chemistry.
- Teaching activity
Analytical chemistry is a science of higher complexity, using the laws of chemistry, physics, mathematics, information science, and biology in order to solve without distorting it the information contained in the analysed samples. The specific means and methods of analysis developed by analytical chemistry are fundamental research tools in pharmaceutical chemistry, clinical chemistry, toxicology, materials science, geochemistry, environmental chemistry and many other fields.
Nowadays, analytical chemistry is part of the group of fundamental disciplines studied at the Faculty of Pharmacy, but due to the particularities of the theoretical and practical notions it is also of special importance for the formation of future specialists. In the current curriculum, the discipline of "Analytical Chemistry and Physico-chemical Methods of Analysis" consists of a course and laboratory class allocated as follows: in the second semester, 3 hours of lectures and 3 hours of practical work weekly , reserved for qualitative analysis; in the third semester, 3 hours lectures and 3 hours of practical work weekly for quantitative chemical analysis (titrimetry, gravimetry), and in the 4th semester, 3 hours lectures and 3 hours of practical works to study the principles of instrumental analysis and separation methods (electrometry-conductometry, potentiometry, volt-amperometry, optical-spectrophotometric methods in UV-Vis, fluorimetry, turbidimetry etc. solvent extraction, column and plane chromatography, TG, DTG).
Thus, students are given the opportunity to understand the "chemical phenomenon" and their importance in the study of specialty disciplines, and they are also familiarized with the notions, concepts, methods and procedures used in the scientific discourse and the research activity that accompany the study of the pharmacologically active substances with therapeutic potential.
The didactic activity is completed by the initiation in the scientific research of the students with special skills in the analytical chemistry, in which students of III, IV and V years, as well as students from the second year are involved each year. The results have materilized in more than 45 papers presented during the Student Scientific Sessions, with over 20 prizes received between 1995 and 2017, and also, a large number of students from the 5th year did their graduation research project here.
- Scientific Activity
The research activity carried out by the entire team at the discipline is now oriented towards the development and validation of new methods of separation, identification and determination (high performance liquid chromatography, capillary electrophoresis) of pharmaceutical substances in bulk, complex mixtures and in pharmaceutical dosage forms, for the separation, identification of components and characterization of plant extracts, liquid-chromatographic and electrophoretic chiral separation and also the study of the influence of natural cyclodextrins and cyclodextrin derivatives on the physicochemical, analytical and pharmaceutical properties of pharmacologically active substances .
The main research directions are:
- Exploring the particular aspects of modern methods of separation and analysis (chromatography, capillary electrophoresis, spectrometry, thermal analysis) in order to identify the possibilities for their use in pharmaceutical analysis
- Determination of the physicochemical, analytical and / or pharmaceutical parameters of new chemical entities such as supramolecular systems (for example, inclusion complexes of pharmaceutical compounds with cyclodextrins) in order to identify their usefulness in pharmaceutical analysis or the development of new pharmaceutical formulations
At present, the research activity of the teaching staff from the discipline of Analytical Chemistry is carried out within the Laboratory for synthesis of inorganic compounds and physico-chemical analysis, a research entity within the Faculty of Pharmacy (http://www.erris.gov.ro) .
The research activity carried out at the discipline has a predominantly applicative character and has been used by over 150 papers published and over 250 papers communicated at different national and international scientific events between 1991 and 2016, some of them being realized through contracts concluded with the Academy of Sciences Medical and the Ministry of Research and Technology or other beneficiaries.
