The Faculty of Dental Medicine at the "Carol Davila" University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest is a center of excellence for training future dentists. The Faculty of Dental Medicine at UMF "Carol Davila" is a place where passion for dental medicine meets high-quality training, preparing students to become successful and innovative professionals in the field of oral health.
The Education Law of 1898 (Article 89) specified that: "Pharmaceutical and dental education is attached to the Faculty of Medicine in Bucharest," providing for "courses and practical work, as well as hospital internships and mandatory examinations that must be passed to obtain the title of dentist." However, the provisions of these laws were not officially applied regarding the training of dentists.
The Health Law of 1910 reiterated the provision that dental practice is reserved for graduates of the Faculty of Medicine but also recognized the rights acquired by dentists without a doctoral degree who had completed specialized studies abroad. This law did not regulate specialized dental education, allowing the profession to be practiced tacitly by individuals without formal training through apprenticeship.
In 1923, the Faculty of Medicine's Professorial Council allowed Dimitrie D. Niculescu to hold free dental lectures for medical students. He would later publish the first dental treatise in Romanian in the following year.
In 1929, the Clinical-Dental Institute was established at Colțea Hospital under the leadership of Professor Mina Minovici. It functioned as a postgraduate training institution for medical faculty graduates, as the specialty of dentistry had no counterpart in higher medical education. The institute was later led by Professor Iacob Iacobovici and moved in 1941 to Colentina Hospital.
In 1935, Dan Theodorescu was appointed as a primary doctor for maxillofacial surgery at Eforia Spitalelor Civile (Colțea Hospital), establishing the first clinical department for oro-maxillofacial surgery in the country. Two years later, Theodorescu took over the leadership of the Clinical-Dental Institute, coordinating its three sections: dental therapy, dental orthopedics (prosthetics), and maxillofacial surgery.
In 1938, the Ministry of Public Instruction issued a decree-law to rationalize higher education, reorganizing university departments and establishing the Dental Conference at the Faculty of Medicine under Dan Theodorescu’s leadership. A year later, the conference was transformed, and Theodorescu became a professor. Thanks to Theodorescu's efforts, the Dental Institute moved to a three-story pavilion at Colentina Hospital, featuring a lecture amphitheater, 74 beds, 60 complete dental units, and a dental technology laboratory. In the same year, the Institute organized the School of Dental Nursing, followed by the Dental Technicians' School in 1943.
In 1948, the education reform (Decree 312 / Nov 9, 1948) transformed the Clinical-Dental Institute into the Faculty of Dentistry, with Professor Emil Eugen Repciuc as the first Dean.
A significant role in organizing dental education in Bucharest was played by Professor Valerian Popescu, a corresponding member of the Romanian Academy. Following Professor Dan Theodorescu's leadership at the maxillofacial surgery clinic, Professor Popescu dominated the dental scientific community in the second half of the 20th century, serving as Dean and representing the faculty. Other prominent figures in the development of university dental education include Professors Dr. Eugen Costa, Dr. Lucian Ene, Dr. Stelică Dumitrescu, Dr. Vasilescu, Dr. Andrei Nass, Dr. Ioan Gall, Dr. Alexandru Epurescu, Dr. Memet Gafar, Dr. Nicolae Duțescu, Dr. Corneliu Burlibașa, Dr. Pătru Firu, Dr. Livia Zarnea, Dr. Nicolae Gănuță, Dr. Sergiu Ioniță, Dr. Valerian Popescu, Dr. Constantin Andreescu, and Dr. Stelorian Stănescu.
