On November 1, 1943, Prof. Dr. Dan Theodorescu opened the first school of dental technicians in Romania within
the new Clinical-Dental Institute, within Colentina Hospital, institute subordinate to the Faculty of Medicine in Bucharest.
This first school was the forerunner of future dental technicians dental schools that were to occur in Romania after the establishment of the Government headed by Petru Groza on March 6, 1945. Initially, these schools functioned more like schools crafts masters coordinated by technicians and dentists, that with the establishment of communist power in Romania, these trade schools gradually disappear, their place being taken by schools with specialized dental education.

Specifically, dentistry is found as self-standing specialization in secondary education of some specialized units (sanitary high schools in the country), or within a well-organized post-secondary schools in many counties in Romania.
This dental education system functioned a period after 1990 when national Dental Technique Colleges were
established, lasting 3 years, beside the Universities of Medicine and Pharmacy in the country.
Since the academic year 2008 colleges in Romania were abolished, the establishment of university education
decreased to 3 and / or 4 years, in this situation being also the College of Dental Technique, which turned into specialized academic lasting all for 3 years.

In the academic year 2013-2014, the specialization Dental Technique was passed in terms of administrative
jurisdiction of Faculty of Midwifes and Nursing, with separated payroll from the Faculty of Dental Medicine,
situation maintained and now .

The medical education within the specialization of Dental Technique is student-centered and must assure his
graduation knowledge and skills to enable them to exercise their profession based on the values of the Bucharest Medical School and to confirm the value of the personal contribution to increasing health nationally and / or internationally.

Students are educated in the spirit of teamwork to provide the optimal treatment in complex situations and inspired with the desire to improve by attending university courses and the desire to transmit to future generations experience.

The educational mission of Dental Technique specialization focuses on the formation of dental technicians, the graduates being prepared to live up to European standards and occupy their important position in the medical team.
Scientific research addresses both specific and individual areas as well as interdisciplinary fields, and research have both fundamental research and practical implications to be considered, innovation and technology transfer in line with current and future requirements in the field.
It highlighted several priority areas in which research has made important performance. It's about highly actual themes in dental science (engineering stereolithography to obtain dentures; realization of biocompatible implant elements, related instrumentary and modular osteosynthesis controlled for treatment of fractures cranio-maxillo-facial; development of manufactured dental implants based on zirconia; Making implants using advanced biocompatible coatings nanostructured electrochemical ceramic applied to titanium; The ergonomy of prevention methods of direct restored teeth), biotech (Establishment of an integrated network for the study of biofilm microbial cell substrates and prosthetic in order to improve the diagnosis and treatment of infections caused by biofilms).
Another line of research addressed successfully focuses on issues of improving quality of life to disabled patients, especially in patients with Down syndrome (Particular aspects in dental treatment of patients with Down Syndrome

Developing a questionnaire and an examination protocol in order to set orthodontic treatment in children with Down syndrome, physical therapist intervention strategies in rehabilitation and social integration of children with Down syndrome).

At Dental Technique specialization, students gain the followind professional skills:
C1 - Appropriate use of the principles underlying the morphology and functionality maxillary
C2 - Applying the concepts of materials, devices and laboratory equipment specific dental work
C3 - Design and manufacture of fixed prosthetic restorations
C4 - design and manufacture of mobile prosthetic restorations, mobilized and composites
C5 - Carrying activities in specific areas: orthodontics and maxillofacial surgery
C6 - Carrying management activities, management and health administration

And transversal skills:
CT1 - Identifying objectives to be achieved, the resources available, the conditions for completion of their work flow, working time, deadlines and related risks.
CT2 - Identifying roles and responsibilities within a multidisciplinary team and application techniques and effective work relationships within the team and the relationship with the patient.
CT3 - Effective use of information sources and communication resources and training assistance (Internet portals, software specialized databases, online courses, etc.) both in Romanian and in an international language.

Dental Technique Specialization is directly involved in the current work coordinated by the Doctoral School.
Permanent development of scientific research base, ensuring all learning resources for doctoral students, and the conditions necessary for their career and personal development are the main objectives of the Faculty.
