Incepand cu anul 1997, Departamentul Universitar de Geriatrie şi Gerontologie prin catedra de Geriatrie-Gerontologie a U.M.F. ,,Carol Davila” a cunoscut o dezvoltare acerba, implicandu-se ca si coordonator al proiectului Tempus Phare ROMGER SJEP 12507, finantat de CE in cadrul FP%, pentru:

  1. recunosterea academica a specialitatii de Geriatrie-Gerontologie in Romania si crearea primei Clinici Universitare de profil in cadrul Institutului National de Geriatrie si Gerontologie ,,Ana Aslan”
  2. crearea primului Colegiu Universitar (de scurta durata) de Geriatrie, Gerontologie si Asistenta Sociala Varstnic, U.M.F. ,,Carol Davila”;
  3. crearea Sylabus-ului si Curricula in Geriatrie, Gerontologie si Psihogeriatrie in consortiul european reprezentat de clinicile de geriatrie in Suedia, Franta, Grecia, Spania, Italia si Malta.

Echipele medicale sunt alcatuite din profesionisti in domeniu: medici cu doua sau trei specialitati (medicina interna, geriatrie gerontologie, gerontopsihiatrie, psihiatrie, neurologie, gastroenterologie, medicina fizica si de recuperare, cardiologie, etc) si multiple competente (terapie laser, imagistica, ultrasonografie echo-doppler, etc), psihologi, doctori in cercetare, asistente medicale cu studii universitare, asistente medicale cu specialitate in geriatrie si asistenta sociala a varstnicului, kinetoterapeuti, etc.

Personalul medical este pregatit si instruit prin intermediul cursurilor si orelor de educatie medicala continua, in tara si in strainatate, majoritatea evenimentelor fiind organizate cu sprijinul stiintific al Departamentului Universitar de Geriatrie si Gerontologie, prin afilierea la diverse asociatii profesionale in domeniu. Astfel, pacientii beneficiaza de implementarea instrumentelor si procedurilor medicale de ultima ora, utilizate eficient in interventiile preventive si curative.

Imbatranirea sanatoasa a devenit dezideratul suprem al politicilor internationale de sanatate si al comunitatii oamenilor de stiinta din intreaga lume. Din pacate bolile de memorie afecteaza majoritar populatia de peste 60 de ani, deci riscul pierderii definitive a calitatii vietii, prin handicap fizic si psihic este enorm, in conditiile in care in Romania aceste centre specializate sunt in faza de pionierat. Numai cel care o data in viata lui a vazut sau a ingrijit pe cineva poate intelege drama pacientului si a ingrijitorului, precum si inalta specializare a serviciilor de oferit acestor pacienti si familiilor lor.

Formează profesional, începând cu anul 1996, peste 7,500 de studenți, rezidenți, specialiști în Neurologie, Psihiatrie, Medicină de Familie, Neuroimagistică, Medicină de Laborator (biomarkeri pentru îmbătrânirea patologică), asistenți medicali generaliști.

Elaborează primul Syllabus și Curricula în Geriatrie și Gerontologie academică în 1998, OBȚINÂND PENTRU PRIMA OARĂ recunoașterea academică a specialității de Geriatrie și Gerontologie.

Începând cu 2010 coordonează grupul de experți pentru elaborarea Curriculei și Syllabus-ului de Metode și tehnici în Brain Aging, în cadrul unui proiect strategic național de educație integrată pentru medici din 7 specialități și asistenți medicali.

    1. obtain academical recognition of the Geriatrics-Gerontology specialty in Romania
    2. establish the first University College of Geriatrics, Gerontology and Social Assistance for Elders, within UMF “Carol Davila”;
    3. develop the first Curriculum and Syllabus in Geriatrics, Gerontology and Psychogeriatrics within a European consortium including Geriatric Clinical Departments in Sweden,France, Greece, Spain, Italy and Israel
    4. establish the first University Clinic of Geriatrics and Gerontology inside “Ana Aslan” Hospital, Otopeni, Romania.
